How the “windows of the soul” can lead to deeper self-love

Self-care is important

You’re all you got has never been more relevant

You might have heard this one before: The longest relationship you’ll ever have is the one with yourself. Yes, you. The beautiful and amazing human you see when you look in the mirror every day.

The old saying is indeed true and a timeless one at that. We are in a relationship with ourselves every day- 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. No matter what is going on, we always have the option to treat ourselves well or to put our self-care at the bottom of the list. As another age-old saying goes, “No matter where you go, there you are.” So, why not treat yourself right, first?

Slow down, speed racer

It occurred to me recently that our acts of free will can be intentional acts of self-love and care. If we stop and slow down, we have the ability to really nurture and soothe the inner ourselves, to show her that love she absolutely deserves. In our 24/7 society, slowing down can prove a challenge and because of the pace at which we operate as human beings, when we stop these days, we can typically fall over into collapse.

That’s why I’m sharing a little practice today that has helped me create intentionality around giving back to my sweet, sweet heart and to lean into loving myself wholly and purposefully. This is a practice that has definitely helped me through harder times over the years, especially when I was single and reconnecting to my true divine nature.

The eyes have it

I call this exercise, The Windows of the Soul, simply because it involves taking a few minutes to look yourself in the eyes. If you can’t initially look at yourself in the mirror for a few minutes, I recommend lying in bed in the dark and starting from a place of resonance and ease that doesn’t involve direct eye contact in the mirror. One step at a time is absolutely ok and you can work up to the mirror exercise.

“I love you” is all you need to get started

To get started in creating self-love as a daily practice, all it takes is saying “I love you” with a hand on your heart space. That’s it. There is magic to articulating those 3 words- the frequency of “I love you” is pure energy. By focusing on yourself and making feeling good about yourself a priority, you are nourishing your relationship with yourself and detangling some of the negative self-talk that undoubtedly takes up way too much real estate in your head and disconnects you from heart and purpose. When you slow down, purposefully and intentionally articulate your love for you, you are creating an opening in your heart for receiving abundance, activating peace, and nourishing your incredibly powerful and sweet soul.

Here are the steps to applying The Windows of the Soul exercise:

1. Give yourself permission to slow down and take the time to connect to your heart.

2. Lying down (if applicable), place your hand over your heart space. Close your eyes for extra points, but it’s not necessary. Articulate, “I love you” at least 3 times. Feel the vibration of those words in the palm of the hand that’s over your heart space.

If you’re in front of the mirror, connect to the eyes in the mirror. Place your hand over your heart space. Articulate “I love you” at least 3 times while looking into the eyes of your reflection. Feel the vibration of those words in the palm of the hand that’s over your heart space.

3. Take deep breaths as you say the magic words. Slow. Deep. Easy. Breaths.

4. Repeat this exercise as needed. Be curious and try not to judge your activity. Let go of expectations. Observe how you feel as you practice this exercise. Does it get easier to say it? Do you feel tightness in your chest as you practice? Can you breathe into the discomfort and imagine your breath loosening that knot? Are you only able to articulate it once? No problem, do what you can. It’s your process to discover. Lean into the very intentional hug you are giving yourself as much as you can and observe the results.

This is an exercise that is designed to set the table for you beginning to purposefully give some love back to the soul within. She needs it. She absolutely deserves it.

Nothing has to be perfect, so shed that idea now.

Practice creates progress. Progress leads to deeper harmony and bliss in your primary relationship. By being kindest to yourself first, you are asking for an improved connection to what’s meaningful to you as well as to your innate knowing.

Try it out and let me know what you experience. I look forward to hearing how this impacts your well-being and energy!
