Progress Over Perfection: How to Overcome Fear and Start Showing Up Online

A person with short blonde hair sits on a couch, holding glasses, embodying the mindset of progress over perfection. Behind them, a black-and-white painting sets the scene for their journey of letting go amid life's complexities.

“I just don’t feel ready yet.”

My client sat across from me, her arms crossed, a mix of excitement and hesitation in her voice. She had spent months refining her message, tweaking her LinkedIn profile, and brainstorming content ideas—but she hadn’t posted a single thing.

“I know I need to put myself out there, but I want to make sure it’s really good first,” she said.

I could hear the perfectionism creeping in. That sneaky voice that convinces us we need to have everything polished before we’re allowed to take up space.

The Difference Between Being Ready and Being Willing

I hear this all the time—people waiting to feel ready before they take action. But the truth is, readiness is an illusion. It’s a moving target that keeps shifting just out of reach, making us believe that one more tweak, one more round of edits, one more practice run will finally bring the confidence we’re craving.

But confidence doesn’t come from waiting. It comes from doing.

What’s really needed isn’t readiness. It’s willingness.

Willingness says: I may not have all the answers, but I’m showing up anyway.
Willingness says: I don’t feel fully prepared, but I trust myself enough to begin.
Willingness says: I know this won’t be perfect, but I’d rather make progress than stay stuck.

Perfectionism is Just Fear in a Fancy Outfit

I asked my client, “What’s the worst thing that could happen if you posted something today that wasn’t perfect?”

She thought for a second, then let out a nervous laugh. “I guess… nothing? Maybe I’d have a typo? Maybe no one would respond?”

Exactly.

So often, we let perfectionism keep us small. We tell ourselves we’re just being “strategic” or “thoughtful” when really, we’re just afraid of being seen. Of being judged. Of getting it wrong.

But here’s what I’ve learned: the most powerful people you see online—the ones who inspire, who make an impact, who attract clients with ease—aren’t perfect. They’re just consistent.

They show up, again and again, even when they don’t feel ready.

Why Messy Action is the Fastest Way to Clarity

I looked at my client and asked, “What if you posted something today—even if it’s not perfect? Just one thing. Let’s prove to your brain that nothing bad happens when you take action.”

She hesitated, then exhaled. “Okay. Let’s do it.”

She wrote a short, honest post about what she does and why she loves it. It wasn’t flawless. It wasn’t meticulously edited. But it was real. It was her voice.

And you know what happened?

People responded.

Not because it was perfect, but because it was her. Because she spoke from the heart.

And in that moment, something shifted. The fear that had been keeping her stuck started to loosen its grip. She realized that imperfect action wasn’t just okay—it was necessary.

How to Let Go of Perfection and Start Taking Action

  1. Redefine What “Good Enough” Means. Your post doesn’t need to be a masterpiece—it just needs to connect.
  2. Set a Time Limit. Give yourself 15-30 minutes to write, then post. No endless tweaking.
  3. Remember That Clarity Comes from Action. You don’t find your voice by thinking about it. You find it by using it.
  4. Focus on Consistency, Not Perfection. Your impact isn’t built on one “perfect” post. It’s built on showing up, again and again.
  5. Ask Yourself: Am I Waiting to Be Ready or Am I Willing to Begin? Willingness is what moves you forward.
